TRANSVERSE

A transverse flux motor is a specialized electric motor where the magnetic flux path travels perpendicularly (transversely) to the axis of rotation, utilizing a complex three-dimensional circuit and circumferential ring windings. 

How It Works

3D Magnetic Path: Unlike radial or axial motors, flux moves axially through the stator, radially across the air gap, and circumferentially along the rotor. 

Ring Winding: Uses a single, simple circumferential coil per phase wrapped around the stator rather than traditional wound end-turns. 

High Pole Count: Separates the electrical and magnetic circuits, allowing massive pole numbers without shrinking copper area. 

Key Advantages

High Torque Density: Delivers exceptional continuous low-speed torque—sometimes up to 10 times conventional architectures. 

High Efficiency: Eliminates copper winding end-turns, greatly reducing resistance and electrical losses.

Direct-Drive Capability: Removes the need for heavy gearboxes in low-speed applications. 

Disadvantages & Challenges

Manufacturing Complexity: Requires intricate 3D magnetic structures and precise assembly of numerous components. 

Lower Power Factor: Can suffer from high leakage flux and lower power factors if not optimized. 

Cost Scaling: Difficult to manufacture cheaply across all sizes, limiting broad mass production. 

Common Applications

Electric Vehicles: In-wheel direct traction motors to eliminate reduction gearboxes.

Wind Turbines: Gearless direct-connection generators.

Industrial Hardware: High-torque actuators and specialized pumps (such as developments by ETM / Graco).

TRANSVERSE 

Transverse flux motors generally do not have standard, off-the-shelf consumer pricing because they are specialized, highly customized industrial or automotive components.

Cost Factors and Market Positioning

High Torque-to-Cost Efficiency: According to manufacturers like ETM, transverse flux motors (TFMs) aim to deliver high continuous torque—up to 10 times that of conventional motors—at a lower cost per newton-meter of torque when compared to complex high-ratio gearbox and induction motor setups. 

Manufacturing Complexity: While they offer high torque density and eliminate the need for external gearboxes in direct-drive applications, their complex 3D electromagnetic paths and mechanical designs can make initial engineering, customization, and small-batch manufacturing more complicated and expensive than standard radial flux alternatives. 

Specific Retail Examples: While bulk industrial units require custom quotes, surplus or specific application-tied transverse flux assemblies (such as conveyor-rated units) have occasionally appeared on secondary marketplaces starting around $490 CAD, whereas large-scale high-performance alternatives like specialized axial or hybrid flux systems often range from $1,250 CAD upwards of several thousand dollars depending on output.
